Honoring Heroes: Plymouth's Legacy of Support for Veterans
Plymouth, Massachusetts, stands as a testament to the enduring gratitude and support for those who have served. From the very roots of American history, Plymouth has been a beacon of recognition for veterans, with the first law in the nation to care for disabled veterans enacted here in 1636. Nearly four centuries later, this tradition of reverence continues to thrive, making Plymouth the perfect setting for our Salute to Service Celebration.
Why Plymouth Memorial Hall and Its Military Connection
At the heart of this legacy stands Plymouth Memorial Hall, a venerable institution with deep ties to the military community. Since its inception in 1924, as a refuge for returning soldiers seeking solace and connection, it has remained a steadfast symbol of honor and appreciation for those who have served. From hosting spaghetti suppers in 1926, fostering camaraderie among veterans, to its renaming as "The Memorial School" in 1950, this hall has been a living memorial to the sacrifices of Plymouth's veterans from World Wars I and II.
Today, Plymouth Memorial Hall continues its noble mission, serving as a poignant reminder of the courage and commitment of those who have worn the uniform. Its main entrance now stands as a War Memorial, adorned with artifacts and tributes to Vietnam veterans, Gold Star families, and all who have served. Moreover, it remains a vital hub for veteran organizations such as the American Legion and DAV, ensuring that the legacy of service and sacrifice endures, honored by present and future generations alike.

Thank you very much. We are proud to be part of a community who serves our veterans, active duty servicemembers and their families. Our mission is simple; To break barriers and ease the burden of out-of-pocket health care costs for them through our Health Care Assistance Program, HCAP and smart card delivery system, and we are so thankful to the VFW for their support in that mission.” said Duggan.
On December 3, 2021, MNF and Veterans of Massachusetts VFW Foundation (MVFWF) also a 501C-3 Non-Profit, made their relationship official by supporting the MNF's mission. “It was a great pleasure to sign this Memorandum of Understanding with Michael Duggan”, said Doug Wood, President of the MVFWF. “The VFW has been a longtime advocate of supporting organizations who have demonstrated a real commitment to helping to service our Veterans.” The MVFWF is one of the organizations that can refer needy service members to the MNF. The MNF is thankful to have the support of two statewide organizations, the MVFWF and VA Boston Healthcare System.
The Secretary of Veteran Affairs of Massachusetts Cheryl Poppy was in attendance for the annual banguet and in speaking, received applause as she stated; “ Massachusetts leads the nation in veterans benefits and services.” She mentioned plans for upgrades for the Soldier’s Homes in Chelsea and Holyoke with the Chelsea location expected completion date in the fall of this year and the anticipation of grant funding for Holyoke. She thanked outgoing Commander Doug Wood and presented a Citation from the Governor’s Office for his many years of dedicated service.
The recipient of The MVFWF donation this year was the Fisher House Foundation of Boston and were awarded $36,000 in support. They assist the military community going through a medical crisis by providing lodging and transportation. They estimate they have saved families nearly $550 million in out-of-pocket costs. In 2021, they served 27,000 families.
Doug Wood’s letter to Comrades, Sisters, and Friends on the banquet program congratulated all award recipients. He thanked the officers and members who were so supportive to the VFW in the past year and spoke of the challenges and changes that will benefit members in the coming years. He recognized the incoming commander Mike Raymond and they both participated in the official change of command ceremony which took place at the banquet.
After his commissioning, Mike Raymond, the Veteran Services Director for the town of Mansfield, MA addressed attendees saying; “Every day I feel like I’m the luckiest man alive as I get to serve our veterans and their widows and their dependents.” He concluded by thanking all in attendance and those that volunteer to assist veterans.
Eric Segundo, current National Council Member, currently employed with the town of Ludlow, Massachusetts, as the Director of Veterans Services is a VFW Accredited VA VSO. An Army Veteran, he earned his VFW eligibility serving in Iraq in Support of Operation Iraqi Freedom III. As keynote speaker of the evening Segundo spoke highly of members’ efforts through the pandemic saying; “The grit, determination and tenacity you have all shown has been nothing less than astonishing. You made sure service to others remained at the forefront by collecting donations of food or clothing, performing buddy checks, or providing transportation for veterans for their appointments. You understood the importance of what we do and you did not stop. Everything you do, even if it’s the smallest initiative, has far reaching positive impacts on the community we serve just like the ripple effect a small pebble has on a calm lake.” Actions speak louder than words, and that ladies and gentlemen, is our battle cry.” He spoke about national membership and its continued decline and encouraged efforts to recruit new members. He concluded by saying: “ Let’s take our optimism into this next year and show America what we’re all about.”’

Calling All Heroes!
We were honored to be invited to participate in a Memorial Day Weekend ceremony at #sixflagsnewengland in remembrance of those who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving our nation. Many thanks to the #veterans and active duty servicemembers and their families who joined us for the honor ceremony and the 'ride of bravery' on #supermantheride in honor of the fallen. The Medic Now Foundation's mission is to cover out of pocket costs for our servicemembers and their families through our health care assistance program (HCAP). We are grateful to #sixflags and Jennifer McGrath for recognizing the need and standing with us in that mission by providing a donation this year.
STAND UP FOR ALL WHO HAVE SErved!

Medic Now Foundation Partners with Six Flags New England on “Military Appreciation Week” to raise awareness for veterans.
August 1, 2019 – Medic Now Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to broadening healthcare access for our military families, veterans, and active duty service members, was proud to partner with Six Flags New England on “Military Appreciation Week” from July 3 – July 6, 2019. During this time, all active and retired military enjoyed free entry to Six Flags New England with valid ID. Also as part of “Military Appreciation Week” at Six Flags, guests were invited to donate toiletries and First Aid kits in exchange for a discounted ticket to the park. Hundreds of toiletry donations will be presented to the Boston VA Healthcare system to support our Veterans.
“We are so excited to be able to partner with Six Flags New England to give our service members free access to the park while also raising supplies and awareness for our men and women in uniform,” said Michael Duggan, President and Founder of Medic Now Foundation. “Being able to provide some day-to-day necessities to those who have served and protected is the least we can do. We look forward to continuing to assist our veterans and active service members in any way that we can.”
“Six Flags New England was thrilled to partner with Medic Now for the park’s annual Coca-Cola July 4th Fest, said Jennifer McGrath, Communications Manager for Six Flags New England. “The event was extremely successful as we celebrated the incredible men and women who protect our great nation. Our Veterans mean so much to us here at the park and we were honored to highlight their incredible work and efforts at the Thrill Capital of New England. Thank you, Medic Now for your commitment and dedication to our service members and Veterans.”
“While the VA provides exceptional healthcare services for a large number of American Veterans, these benefits are primarily for the Veteran and some Veterans may not necessarily qualify for VA care. I have found the patriotic team at Medic Now Foundation to be highly dedicated to meeting the needs of Veterans that the federal and state agencies may not be authorized to address, including relief for family members who are so crucial to the Veterans well-being,” said David Hencke, Outreach Director, VA Boston Healthcare System. “This heartfelt and tangible support from the community can truly empower a Veteran or military member and strengthen their resiliency and well-being.

MEDIC NOW FOUNDATION AWARDS STIPEND TO WWII VETERANMedic Now Foundation was proud to present an award to US Army veteran Orace “Bud” Holland from Worcester MA, who served during World War II from 1943-1946, landed in Normandy on June 9, 1944 and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. Bud was awarded a Medic Now Foundation stipend that would cover his outstanding medical debt, as a “thank you” for his service to our country.
Corporal Orace “Bud” Holland was a U.S. Army anti-aircraft artilleryman who, on June 9, 1944, landed on the coast of Normandy, France, as a soldier in the 118th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Gun Battalion in the First Army, the oldest field army in the United States Army. First Army fought alongside the British Second Army capturing Cherbourg in the Battle of Normandy and then in Operation Cobra, which helped break through the German lines. First Army would go on to help liberate Paris and fight in the Battle of the Bulge halting at the Elbe River in April 1945. Needless to say, First Army was critical to the success of the Allied Forces in the European theater of World War II. Bud, as an Anti-Aircraft artilleryman, was entrusted with carrying more than 40 lbs of TNT through battlefields, often targeted by German snipers. He often claims “I was just doing my job.” The Medic Now Foundation was proud to award Bud their latest medical stipend, which took care of an outstanding medical bill that had been crippling Bud and his wife, Alice. They are truly examples of American Treasures, and the Medic Now Foundation is committed to supporting veterans like Bud in taking care of out-of-pocket healthcare costs. |
